{"id":222,"date":"2016-02-09T21:13:20","date_gmt":"2016-02-09T21:13:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/devotedfamilydental.com\/blog\/?p=222"},"modified":"2017-04-27T19:32:46","modified_gmt":"2017-04-27T19:32:46","slug":"mercury-fillings-could-pose-major-health-problems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.devotedfamilydental.com\/blog\/2016\/02\/09\/mercury-fillings-could-pose-major-health-problems\/","title":{"rendered":"Mercury Fillings Could Pose Major Health Problems"},"content":{"rendered":"\"white-fillings<\/a>\r\n\r\nFor many, going to the dentist is not an exciting event.\u00a0 Who really wants someone to suck up their saliva while drilling, picking, and filling their teeth?!\u00a0 A trip to the dentist can not only be painful, but you can also end up having health problems if you\u2019re there for fillings.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nAccording to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), amalgam fillings have been used for more than 150 years in hundreds of millions of patients.\u00a0 With such common use, it\u2019s surprising that these dental fillings are composed of 50 percent mercury.\u00a0 Mercury carries potential risks that are harmful: It is poisonous to the nervous system, which can cause tremors, headaches, neuromuscular changes, emotional instability, memory loss and insomnia.\r\n\r\nDental amalgams release low levels of mercury in vapor form, which can be inhaled and absorbed by the lungs.\u00a0 This process causes the mercury to move easily from the bloodstream into the brain when eating, brushing your teeth, or drinking.\r\n\r\nFor over 30 years, the FDA abstained from issuing any public warning about dental amalgam\u2019s neurotoxic risks.\u00a0 Interestingly enough, in 2009, they declared it safe under Class 2 for adults and children over the age of 6 who are not allergic to mercury.\r\n\r\nThe FDA was very aware of the fact that mercury is highly toxic.\u00a0 Yet, they still decided to make such an absurd declaration.\r\n\r\nIn 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) initiated canceling the use of dental amalgam in their detailed article: \u201cFuture Use of Materials for Dental Restoration.\u201d\u00a0 In the same year, Europe also announced that they wanted to ban mercury fillings.\r\n\r\nWhen these proclamations came to the surface, many expected the FDA to make an announcement on the matter.\u00a0 The FDA did come forward, but not in a way that many wanted them to.\u00a0 They stayed firm on their stance, stating that they may never ban the use of mercury in dental fillings.\r\n\r\nConsidering that mercury vapors are passed easily from the bloodstream into the brain, children and fetuses are more at risk because their brains are still developing.\u00a0 This, however, doesn\u2019t change the fact that anyone who has fillings is susceptible to the health risks caused by the dental amalgams.\r\n\r\nMercury fillings may never leave the dental market.\u00a0 But that doesn\u2019t mean that these types of fillings are your only <\/em>option.\u00a0 Before getting a cavity filled, it would be wise to do research because you do have various choices.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"For many, going to the dentist is not an exciting event.\u00a0 Who really wants someone to suck up their saliva while drilling, picking, and filling their teeth?!\u00a0 (Read More)<\/a>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-222","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-dental-hygiene"],"yoast_head":"\nMercury Fillings Could Pose Major Health Problems -
