Most people are not aware of the ingredients that make up their toothpaste. However, most health-minded people have turned to toothpaste that is homemade and natural. Once you have the active ingredients, you will find that it is a good way to save money.

Why make homemade natural toothpaste

First, you will gain a great sense of accomplishment from building a product from scratch. Considering that you have been using a commercial product with some harmful ingredients, you will breathe a sigh of relief to know you are in charge of your oral hygiene. Secondly, you get to save money and oral health that you would have used to buy commercial toothpaste. Surprisingly, it only takes 5 minutes to do so. Additionally, the ingredients are easily found in your grocery store.

Ingredients to use

  • Baking soda two-thirds of a cup
  • Fine sea salt: one teaspoon. You can leave out the sea salt if it is too tasty and not for your liking.
  • Peppermint extract: one to two teaspoons. You can also use 10 to 15 drops of peppermint essential oils.
  • Filtered water: add this to a point where there is desired consistency with the other ingredients.
  • Coconut oil: you can use this ingredient as opposed to water. Add this for taste. Melt the coconut oil and add the other ingredients into it.

Instructions to make the homemade natural toothpaste:

  • Mix the ingredients together; these are the baking soda, optional salt, and peppermint.
  • Add a little water and stir with each addition.
  • Stir until you have reached the required consistency.
  • You can melt and add coconut oil to the mix as it creates some good taste to the paste.
  • Once your paste is just right, store it in a container and get ready to get rid of that bad breath using homemade natural toothpaste.

Using the above ingredients, you will notice that you save up to $4.30 compared to buying a tube of commercial toothpaste. Additionally, you get to take charge of your oral health. You also have an educational, fun and useful time preparing the homemade natural toothpaste.

Once you are through with the preparation, place the homemade natural toothpaste in a container and store it at room temperature.

Concerns about the ingredients

  • Baking soda is considered abrasive. However, on the Relative Dentin Abrasivity scale, commercial toothpaste is much more abrasive.
  • There are concerns about consumption of essential oils. However, if you have used toothpaste before, you know you are not supposed to swallow.
  • As for the container, ensure that you use one that will keep away heat to preserve the essential oils in the ingredients.
  • Why is fluoride not included in the ingredients? Online sources mention that fluoride is necessary to make your teeth strong. However, this is not the case, if you were to do some research on fluoride as used in dentistry. You will realize that it is toxic if ingested in high levels.

Finally, once you are through making the toothpaste, try it and find out how it treats your oral health. There will be improved oral hygiene, and you will be using a product that you know has no toxic ingredients. Therefore, do your research and find out what other ingredients you can add to improve your oral health.
